Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas has explained his decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, despite previously backing Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election.
In a recent interview with Arise News, Archbishop Kawas claimed that Obi did not provide him with any financial assistance during the 2023 campaign, despite his support for the former Anambra State governor.
The cleric reportedly said his experience influenced his decision to shift his political support ahead of the next presidential election.
His comments have sparked reactions online, particularly among supporters of Obi and Tinubu, as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of 2027.
The Archbishop’s position adds to the growing debate over whether political support should be based on personal relationships and assistance or on leadership performance, policies and national interest.
As the 2027 election approaches, more politicians, religious leaders and influential Nigerians are expected to publicly declare their preferred candidates.
However, the claim that Obi did not give the Archbishop “one naira” remains a statement attributed to the cleric.
