United States President Donald Trump has attacked Norway over his failure to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, declaring that he does not want Norwegian immigrants in the United States.
Trump made the remarks at a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, October 25, where he linked his hostility towards Norway to the Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him the prestigious honour.
“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually,” Trump said, according to Reuters and Agence France-Presse.
Discussing immigration, Trump said he would welcome people from some countries but exclude Norwegians because he had not received the Nobel Peace Prize.
“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he declared.
Trump has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic efforts and claims of helping resolve international conflicts deserved recognition. Earlier in October, he described the decision to overlook him for the prize as an “indelible stain” on Norway.
However, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee, whose members are appointed by Norway’s parliament. The Norwegian government does not select the winner.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide reiterated the committee’s independence following Trump’s latest remarks, saying the authorities had reminded the US president of that fact.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to South African jurist and former United Nations human rights chief Navanethem “Navi” Pillay.
Despite Trump’s declaration, there was no indication that his administration had introduced an official immigration policy specifically excluding Norwegian citizens.
The episode has added a diplomatic dimension to Trump’s repeated public complaints about the Nobel Committee’s decisions, raising questions about the implications of linking a personal grievance over an international award to the treatment of citizens of another country.
