Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, has pledged to intensify grassroots engagement with women across Nigeria following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to support proposed bills seeking to increase women’s representation in elective and appointive positions.
Edu, the Director of Women Mobilisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, made the pledge after Tinubu reaffirmed his support for the proposed legislation during the inauguration of the council at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Thursday, the President acknowledged the contributions of women to political mobilisation and democratic development, urging female leaders to strengthen their advocacy for the proposed bills.
Tinubu expressed confidence that sustained efforts by women leaders would help advance the proposed legislation.
Reacting to the President’s remarks, Edu commended him for his commitment to improving women’s participation in governance, describing the proposed bills as an important step towards expanding their representation in political and public offices.
She also pledged to strengthen grassroots structures and engage women across communities under the supervision of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Edu said the mobilisation drive would encourage greater participation among women while supporting efforts to advance their interests in governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed bills are aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s political and governance structures.
However, the proposed measures must undergo the relevant legislative processes before they can become law and take effect.
