Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers State, has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the state.
In a statement issued Wednesday night, Fubara explained that his decision was driven by “conviction and sacrifice” for the peace and unity of Rivers State. He emphasized that personal ambition must sometimes yield to the greater good.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” Fubara said.
He expressed gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging their loyalty, and reiterated his commitment to serving Rivers State until the end of his term.
The governor’s withdrawal comes after an APC screening exercise that also involved Kingsley Chinda, an ally of former governor Nyesom Wike.
Following the screening, Fubara appeared downcast, sparking speculation that he may have faced disqualification.
Reports indicate that several of Fubara’s allies were disqualified in the Rivers State House of Assembly primaries, while aspirants aligned with Wike were cleared.
Fubara and Wike have been involved in a prolonged political struggle, including efforts to impeach the governor, with most lawmakers supporting the impeachment being Wike allies.
The decision marks a significant turn in Rivers State politics ahead of the APC gubernatorial primary.
