The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has cleared 33 aspirants to contest the party’s State House of Assembly primaries ahead of the 2027 elections, while 65 others were disqualified following the screening exercise conducted in Port Harcourt.
The screening report emerged on May 11, 2026, with all 29 serving lawmakers loyal to former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, successfully cleared by the committee. The cleared lawmakers are led by Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol, while Speaker Martin Amaewhule was reported to have obtained nomination forms for the House of Representatives race.
According to the committee’s report, a total of 98 aspirants participated in the exercise. However, aspirants reportedly aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, including former factional speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo and other pro-Fubara lawmakers, were among those not cleared.
The committee stated that some aspirants were disqualified over issues including incomplete documentation, irregular nomination processes, invalid party membership records, conflicting personal information, and alleged attempts to improperly influence the screening process.
The development is expected to deepen political tensions within the Rivers APC as rivalry between loyalists of Wike and Governor Fubara continues ahead of the 2027 general elections.
