The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has raised alarm over the persistent cases of building collapse across Nigeria, blaming the problem largely on the use of substandard construction materials, unqualified workers, and the widespread disregard for approved structural designs.
The warning was issued by Gyok Luka, Chairman of the NIOB Enugu State Chapter, during a press briefing held in Enugu on Monday, March 10, 2026, as part of activities marking the institute’s 2026 Builders’ Week. Luka expressed deep concern about the increasing incidents of structural failures reported in different parts of the country.
According to the professional body, investigations into many collapsed structures reveal recurring patterns of poor construction supervision, inferior materials, and the engagement of unqualified personnel in building projects. These practices, the institute warned, continue to endanger lives, destroy property, and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s construction industry.
The institute also called on government regulatory agencies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement of the National Building Code to ensure compliance at every stage of construction.
Experts say unless authorities enforce strict professional standards, Nigeria may continue to witness avoidable tragedies linked to structural failures in the building sector.
