LISBON — October 11, 2026. The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença, has expressed confidence that Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Portugal’s national team in November, despite disciplinary proceedings against the veteran forward.
“The Federation, the coach, all the teammates are aligned: we want Cristiano back,” Proença said, adding that Ronaldo was also willing to return.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr captain became the subject of disciplinary action after leaving Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30, following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.
Ronaldo had been an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway and reportedly believed the coach had gone back on assurances about his playing time. Jesus denied making a formal agreement but left the door open for the forward’s return.
Ronaldo subsequently apologised for leaving his teammates and failing to acknowledge supporters, while confirming his willingness to accept any punishment and continue representing Portugal.
However, his November return is not yet formally guaranteed. The FPF has opened disciplinary proceedings and imposed a provisional, non-automatic suspension. Proença said the final decision rests with the federation’s independent disciplinary authorities.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 before travelling to Wales on November 17 in their Nations League fixtures.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record international goalscorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances. His possible return would bring renewed attention to the team as it prepares for its November matches.
