Portugal legend António Simões has said Cristiano Ronaldo will receive a memorable farewell from the national team if he learns to place the collective ahead of himself.
Simões was speaking after Ronaldo issued a statement on Tuesday explaining the controversy and circumstances surrounding his exit from Portugal’s national team camp.
The former Portuguese international, according to A Bola, argued that Ronaldo’s remarkable career should now be accompanied by a broader understanding of his role and influence.
“A player who has had such a career, who has become a man, must find a way to think beyond himself,” Simões said.
He stressed that Ronaldo’s value to Portugal should not be judged only by his goalscoring record.
“Goals are not everything; the game itself is equally important. These values should all be part of him.
“If Ronaldo understands this, we’ll give him a wonderful farewell ceremony.”
Ronaldo has established himself as Portugal’s most prominent football figure, having represented the country for many years and broken numerous international goalscoring records.
