The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Favour Olaniyi, whose body was discovered inside a bush near the institution’s North Gate.

The incident was reported on May 10, 2026, after the 23-year-old student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics was found lifeless close to his off-campus residence in Akure. Police authorities said detectives who visited the scene observed no visible marks of violence on the deceased.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered near the body, raising suspicions surrounding the circumstances of the death.

He added that the corpse had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further examination while investigations continue.

FUTA management described the incident as “sad and unfortunate,” stating that the university had informed the deceased’s family and was cooperating fully with investigators.

The institution also said counselling support was being provided for affected students.
