Several civilians have reportedly been killed following a military airstrike in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, in what residents described as another accidental bombardment during ongoing security operations against armed groups.
The incident occurred on May 10, 2026, in Guradnayi community near Kusasu, where local sources said military aircraft targeting suspected bandits mistakenly hit civilian settlements. Residents claimed that women and children were among the casualties, while several others sustained injuries during the early morning strike.
Community members said the affected area has faced repeated attacks from armed groups in recent months, leading to intensified military operations across parts of Shiroro and neighbouring communities. Security authorities are yet to release a detailed official statement confirming casualty figures as of the time of filing this report.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over recurring accidental military airstrikes in Nigeria’s conflict zones.
Human rights organisations and security analysts have repeatedly called for improved intelligence gathering, operational coordination, and stricter engagement protocols to reduce civilian casualties during counterterrorism operations.
