Nollywood veteran actress Patience Ozokwo, popularly known as Mama G, has explained why she has become one of the Nigerian film industry’s most recognisable faces when it comes to playing witches, wicked mothers and antagonistic characters.
The veteran actress made the revelation during a recent interview with comedian and content creator Carter Efe, explaining that her repeated portrayal of controversial characters goes beyond entertainment.
According to Ozokwo, she sees the roles as an opportunity to expose injustice, wickedness and other forms of wrongdoing in society. She said she dislikes injustice, war and rancour, and uses difficult characters to communicate moral lessons to viewers.
The actress explained that when she accepts such roles, she tries to portray the consequences of destructive behaviour in a manner that encourages audiences to reflect on their own actions.
Her comments offer a different perspective on the “wicked mother” image that has followed her throughout her illustrious Nollywood career. For many Nigerians who grew up watching her films, Mama G became so convincing in villainous roles that some viewers jokingly associated her on-screen personality with real-life wickedness.
Ozokwo has, however, repeatedly demonstrated that her acting ability is fundamentally different from her personality outside the screen.
Her career has made her one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actresses, with her performances earning her widespread admiration and major industry recognition.
The recent interview has once again reminded audiences that behind the frightening witches and uncompromising mothers they see on screen is an actress deliberately using her craft to tell stories and communicate messages about morality, justice and human behaviour.
