The runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, is expected to close for approximately 25 days from October 20 as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans major rehabilitation work.
The proposed shutdown, which is yet to receive final confirmation, will allow contractors to repair damaged sections of the runway and resurface areas affected by potholes and extensive cracks.
FAAN attributed the deterioration partly to recent heavy rainfall, adding that the repairs were necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The rehabilitation will include pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing. A runway extension is also planned to improve the airport’s ability to handle larger aircraft as passenger and flight traffic increases.
FAAN said the project was intended to upgrade airport infrastructure ahead of the expected Christmas travel rush and improve operational efficiency.
The authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said passengers intending to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure should contact their airlines for information about flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
FAAN added that it would communicate the final closure and reopening dates after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The authority appealed for the cooperation of airlines, passengers and other airport users during the exercise, saying the rehabilitation formed part of its commitment to maintaining safe and reliable airport facilities.
