Atiku Faults FG’s 30-Day Petrol Discount, Calls for Lasting Relief

By Abdulqadir Muhammad Alhaji

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day petrol discount, describing the measure as a temporary intervention and calling for more sustainable solutions to the country’s rising cost of living.

Atiku, through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, said the temporary discount would not address the underlying challenges affecting Nigerians, particularly the high cost of petrol, transportation and food.

He questioned what would happen after the 30-day period, arguing that Nigerians could again face the same economic pressures once the discount expires.

The former vice president also questioned the details of the proposed measure, including the exact amount consumers would save per litre and whether the discount for commercial transport operators would translate into lower fares for passengers.

The Federal Government had earlier announced plans to offer a 30-day discount on petrol sold at NNPC Limited stations, with priority reportedly given to commercial transport operators. The government said the measure was not a return to the former petrol subsidy regime.

Atiku called for measures capable of providing lasting relief to Nigerians rather than interventions limited to a 30-day period.
