More than 90 students were reportedly hospitalised after a suspected chemical emission triggered panic across several schools and surrounding communities in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The incident occurred on May 15, 2026, when students and residents suddenly perceived a strong chemical odour spreading through parts of the town, leading to breathing difficulties, dizziness, fainting, and widespread panic among pupils and teachers.
Affected students from different secondary schools were rushed to nearby hospitals and medical centres for emergency treatment as parents stormed school premises amid fears of possible toxic exposure.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion as students hurriedly evacuated classrooms while some collapsed during the panic.
Officials of the Ogun State Government, emergency response agencies, environmental authorities, and security operatives were deployed to investigate the source of the suspected chemical emission and restore calm within the affected communities.
Authorities stated that preliminary investigations were ongoing to determine whether the odour originated from industrial activities, chemical leakage, or environmental contamination. Residents were also advised to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
Medical personnel confirmed that many of the affected students were stabilised after receiving treatment, although health officials continued monitoring the situation closely to prevent further complications.
