Ondo govt okays Jan 2 work-free day, road projects, chieftaincy appointments

The Ondo State Government has approved Friday, January 2, 2026, as a work-free day for public servants to ease their return to duty after the New Year festivities.

The Head of Service, Pastor Bayo Philip, disclosed this in a statement issued in Akure, stating that the approval was granted by the State Executive Council.

He said full official activities would resume on Monday, January 5, 2026, beginning with the customary first workday prayer session across ministries, departments and agencies.

Philip advised workers to ensure safe travel and timely resumption, while reiterating the government’s commitment to the welfare and productivity of the workforce.

In a related development, the State Executive Council has also taken decisions on infrastructure and traditional leadership matters in the state.

Addressing journalists after the council’s final meeting for 2025, the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Mr Abiola Olawoye, said approval was given for the construction of roads in Sabomi community, Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

He explained that the road project aligned with the Aiyedatiwa administration’s drive to improve infrastructure, open up riverine communities and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, said the council approved the appointment of His Royal Highness, Owei Kekemeke, as the pioneer Amananawe of Agadgba Obon in Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

Takuro also said warrant letters were approved for the appointment of a new Alade Okun of Alade Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area.

He noted that all the approvals followed due process and were intended to strengthen traditional institutions and foster peace and development at the grassroots.
