The Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (OSPHCDA) has officially commenced the distribution of appointment letters to over 930 newly recruited health professionals across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state. This initiative marks a significant advancement in primary health care delivery and human resources for health in Ondo State.
According to a statement issued by Ayo Falana of OSPHCDA, the distribution exercise began today at the Agency’s headquarters in Akure and includes various health professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, midwives, community health extension workers, laboratory scientists, pharmacy technicians, and health information officers. The new recruits are expected to fill critical manpower gaps in all Primary Health Care facilities statewide.
During the flag-off of the distribution, Dr. Francis Akanbiemu, the Permanent Secretary of OSPHCA, described the recruitment as a timely intervention by the State Government aimed at strengthening frontline health services and improving access to quality care at the grassroots level. He emphasized that the recruitment process was merit-based, transparent, and aligned with the State’s Human Resource for Health Policy.
Dr. Akanbiemu commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his steadfast commitment to the health and wellbeing of the populace. He noted that the Governor’s approval for this large-scale recruitment reflects a strong political will and a clear understanding that a functional health system relies on skilled and motivated personnel.
The newly appointed health workers have completed their documentation and will be deployed immediately to underserved and hard-to-reach communities. This initiative aims to significantly reduce patient waiting times, enhance antenatal and immunization coverage, and strengthen the state’s response to maternal and child health challenges.
Dr. Akanbiemu highlighted that the Aiyedatiwa administration continues to prioritize health as a critical pillar of its development agenda. He pointed to recent revitalization efforts of primary health care centres, the provision of essential drugs, and the training of health workers as further evidence of the Governor’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage in Ondo State.
The recruitment process has resulted in the employment of 800 staff across various health cadres, in addition to the earlier hiring of 130 doctors and nurses, bringing the total number of professionals employed in this first batch to 930.
Beneficiaries receiving their appointment letters expressed deep gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa for the opportunity to serve. Mrs. Adebimpe Olorunfemi, a newly appointed nurse-midwife, along with pharmacy technician Azeez Olayinka and scientific officer Mrs. Ajibike Afolayan, described the recruitment as “life-changing” and pledged to justify the confidence placed in them through diligence, professionalism, and compassion for patients.
The public has been informed that the deployment of the new health professionals will be closely monitored to ensure equitable distribution and optimal service delivery. Community leaders and Ward Development Committees are encouraged to provide a conducive environment for the staff to thrive in their respective duty posts.
