SOKOTO — September 28, 2026: Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday, September 28, 2026, visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, at his palace in Sokoto State as part of their political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The delegation also included the NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Dr Shamsu Haido, and other party members.
According to the Sultan’s media team, Obi and Kwankwaso used the visit to formally inform the monarch of their political aspirations, discuss national issues and seek his royal blessings ahead of the elections.
The Sultan urged politicians and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly, warning against insults, inflammatory statements and rhetoric capable of heightening tension.
He also reminded political actors of their right to present their programmes and seek the support of voters while respecting one another and protecting the unity of society.
Speaking later at an NDC town hall meeting in Sokoto, Obi identified education, security and national unity as priorities of his proposed administration if elected.
He also pledged to connect all state capitals by railway to facilitate the movement of people and goods, while promising measures aimed at job creation, poverty reduction, healthcare and skills development.
Kwankwaso, meanwhile, highlighted insecurity in the North-West, particularly kidnapping, killings and displacement in rural communities.
The visit came as political parties intensify consultations with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections.
