Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027, saying his administration would first tackle corruption across the country.
Obi made the pledge on Monday, September 28, 2026, during a town hall meeting organised for the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto State, where he addressed concerns over the rising economic pressure on Nigerians.
“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.
He described corruption as a major challenge confronting Nigeria and pledged, if elected, to tackle it across all sectors.
The former Anambra State governor also promised to deploy national resources towards improving security, education and other sectors, declaring that education would be his administration’s priority after unity and security.
Obi further promised to connect all state capitals by railway to facilitate economic activities and promote development.
His latest subsidy pledge comes amid renewed political debate over how petrol prices should be managed following the removal of the subsidy by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023. Obi had previously criticised the manner in which the subsidy was removed while arguing that the system was plagued by corruption.
NDC Vice-Presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso said the Sokoto visit was aimed at engaging residents and seeking their support ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also highlighted insecurity in the North-West, particularly banditry and kidnapping, saying the ticket was committed to addressing the challenges.
The latest promise adds fuel subsidy to the growing list of competing economic proposals being presented by political parties and presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election.
