ABIA — September 28, 2026: The Abia State Police Command says it has recovered 28 human skulls and other human remains from suspected criminal camps in forests around Umuaku, Isuochi and Nneato communities in Umunneochi Local Government Area.
The remains were recovered during an intelligence-led operation on Sunday, September 27, 2026, as police teams searched camps allegedly linked to criminal activities in the area.
Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said tactical teams from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and Isuochi Divisional Police Headquarters participated in the operation.
According to the command, occupants of the suspected camps fled as the operatives approached, abandoning the hideouts.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of the 28 skulls and other bones, some of which were reportedly decomposed.
The police said the remains may be connected to victims of kidnapping, but stressed that their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths have not been established.
No suspect had been arrested as of Monday, September 28, with the command saying efforts were ongoing to locate those who escaped.
Investigators are expected to work on identifying the remains and determining whether they are linked to reported cases of kidnapping or other crimes in the area.
The command said security operations had been intensified across the affected forests as efforts continue to dismantle suspected criminal hideouts and apprehend those behind the activities.
Residents have also been urged to provide information that could assist the investigation and help security agencies track suspected criminal elements operating in the area.
