Former Dino Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the Nigerian Senate, has said that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is a respected Nigerian but may not have the political timing to become president in the 2027 general elections. Melaye made the remark during a televised political discussion aired on Thursday, March 12, 2026, while assessing potential contenders for Nigeria’s next presidential race.
According to Melaye, Obi remains a “fantastic Nigerian” with admirable qualities and a strong reputation among supporters. However, he argued that the political conditions required for Obi to win the presidency in 2027 may not yet be in place. Melaye suggested that Nigeria’s complex political structure requires broad national alliances and strategic timing for any candidate seeking to occupy the nation’s highest office.
The comment has reignited debate among political observers about the prospects of Obi, who was the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election and has maintained a large grassroots following among young voters and reform-minded Nigerians.
Melaye’s statement reflects the intensifying political conversations already emerging as Nigerian politicians and parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
