The National Sports Commission (NSC) has unveiled an improved reward package for Team Nigeria athletes competing at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, significantly increasing performance bonuses and instant cash incentives to drive medal-winning performances.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who said the decision followed consultations with the Commission’s Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, as part of efforts to boost athletes’ morale and reinforce the Federal Government’s commitment to sporting excellence.
Under the revised incentive scheme, every Nigerian athlete who wins a gold medal will receive $10,000, comprising an instant cash reward of $5,000 and another $5,000 paid directly into the athlete’s bank account.
Silver medalists will earn $5,000 in total, with $2,000 presented immediately and $3,000 transferred electronically, while bronze medal winners will receive $3,000, including $1,000 as an instant reward and $2,000 paid into their accounts.
Dikko explained that the initial package for gold medalists stood at $8,000, consisting of $3,000 instant cash and $5,000 paid into athletes’ accounts. However, after meeting Team Nigeria in Aberdeen, the Commission resolved to increase the immediate cash reward to provide stronger motivation for competitors chasing gold.
“Following a brief meeting with the Director-General and after interacting with the team in Aberdeen, we agreed to increase the athletes’ bonuses. The instant cash reward for gold medal winners has been raised from $3,000 to $5,000 to further encourage outstanding performances,” Dikko said.
He disclosed that the three Nigerian athletes who claimed gold medals on the previous day had already benefited from the revised $10,000 reward package, while the latest gold medalists and silver medal winners also received their instant cash payments without delay.
The Commission also strengthened incentives for coaches, announcing a $5,000 performance bonus for any coach whose athlete wins a gold medal at the Games.
In addition, Team Nigeria athletes are receiving a daily allowance of $200, while coaches are entitled to $250 per day throughout the competition.
Dikko noted that the NSC would continue to introduce special incentives where necessary, recalling the on-the-spot cash reward given to Rilwan Idris, which he said inspired the athlete to improve from a likely bronze-medal finish to securing gold.
The enhanced welfare package underscores the National Sports Commission’s determination to provide a motivating environment for Nigerian athletes and coaches, while reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and encouraging Team Nigeria to deliver more podium finishes at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
