NiMet Storm Tokyo For Global Peace and Sustainability Conference

Professor Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led the agency’s delegation to the 5th Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) Conference held from March 4–7, 2026 at the United Nations University (UNU) Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

The NERPS 2026 Conference brought together global experts, policymakers, and researchers to examine the role of technology in strengthening multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainable development.

The conference opened with a welcome address by Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General.

This was followed by keynote speeches delivered by Dr. Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs).

During the four-day event, Prof. Anosike and the NiMet delegation actively participated in several parallel sessions addressing critical global issues. Discussions focused on climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace and security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental sustainability both on land and below water.

The sessions also explored key themes such as climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, and transboundary resource management.

Participants further examined innovative approaches to monitoring and predicting environmental changes to support better policy decisions and global cooperation.

Through its active engagement, the NiMet delegation contributed to knowledge exchange and collaborative dialogue with international stakeholders.

Their participation helped strengthen partnerships and provided a platform for sharing Nigeria’s perspectives on climate services, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development.

The agency’s contributions were also seen as important in advancing discussions on climate action and resilience while promoting Nigeria’s growing role in the global sustainability and climate governance landscape.
