The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread cloudiness, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday, urging residents to take precautionary measures against severe weather conditions.
In its three-day weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected to affect states across the northern, central and southern regions, with strong winds likely to precede rainfall in some locations.
According to NiMet, Wednesday morning will witness patches of cloud with thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states.
Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected to intensify over parts of Kaduna and the entire North-East.
For the North-Central region, the agency predicted cloudy conditions with morning thunderstorms and light rains over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau and Nasarawa states, while moderate rainfall is expected later in the day across Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and the FCT.
In the southern region, cloudy skies are expected during the morning with light rainfall over parts of the South-South. By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is forecast across Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, as well as states in the South-East and South-South.
On Thursday, NiMet said thunderstorms and moderate rains will continue across parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe during the morning before spreading across most of the northern region later in the day.
The agency also forecast thunderstorms with moderate rainfall across the entire North-Central zone throughout Thursday, while Ondo and the South-South are expected to receive moderate rainfall, extending to the South-East later in the day.
For Friday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms over parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba, with rainfall expected to spread across the northern region as the day progresses.
Cloudy conditions are also expected over the North-Central zone, with morning light rains likely in Nasarawa and Benue, followed by moderate rainfall later in the day.
In the South, the agency forecast cloudy skies with light rains across the South-South in the morning and moderate rainfall over parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, and other states in the South-East and South-South by afternoon.
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, unplug electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injuries from falling branches.
The agency also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning and encouraged the public to stay updated through its regular weather advisories.
