The Nigerian Army, operating under Operation Eastern Sanity, destroyed several camps belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Anambra State on March 5, 2026, as part of intensified clearance operations targeting separatist strongholds. The raids occurred deep inside forested enclaves used by militants as bases for attacks, kidnapping and illicit activities that have plagued southeastern communities for years.
During the missions, troops recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition and improvised explosive device (IED) components, exposing the militants’ capacity to manufacture deadly devices intended for use against security forces and civilians alike. The seizures included rifles and IED‑making materials that impede the rebels’ ability to sustain violent operations.
Military officials said the successful operations were intelligence‑led and coordinated, aimed at dismantling the logistical and operational infrastructure that allowed IPOB/ESN elements to evade capture and attack communities. By neutralising these camps and seizing explosive‑related materials, the Army sought to reduce the group’s freedom of movement and degrade its capacity to carry out attacks.
The offensive underscores the Nigerian military’s persistent focus on restoring security, protecting civilians and dismantling criminal networks in the Southeast, reinforcing nationwide efforts to confront insurgency and separatist violence.
