A Catholic cathedral in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, was severely damaged after a fire outbreak engulfed parts of the church building, destroying valuable property and raising concerns about fire safety in public worship centres. The incident occurred on March 4, 2026, at the cathedral located in Jalingo Local Government Area, where flames reportedly spread through sections of the church before emergency efforts brought the situation under control.
Church officials and local residents quickly mobilised to contain the blaze while firefighters were alerted to prevent the inferno from consuming the entire structure. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported, although the fire destroyed equipment and other church assets worth significant amounts.
Preliminary findings suggest the blaze may have been triggered by an electrical fault within the cathedral’s power system, though authorities indicated that a full investigation would determine the exact cause.
The incident highlights growing concerns over electrical safety and fire preparedness in large public buildings, particularly religious centres that attract large congregations. Community leaders have since called for improved maintenance of electrical installations and stronger emergency response mechanisms to prevent similar disasters in the future.
