LAGOS — A viral campus interview conducted by one Oyindamola on X (@dammiedammie35) has set the internet on fire , after a group of students openly declared that they would refuse to date any man earning between 100,000 and 500,000 naira per month, Starnews NG reports.
In the candid segment, a group of respondents in a school yet to be identified were asked to weigh in on their dating standards in the face of Nigeria’s current economic climate. The responses were swift and blunt, with many students dismissing these salary brackets as insufficient to support their lifestyles.
When asked if they could date a man earning 100,000 naira monthly, one respondent immediately countered, “Can you afford my skincare?” The rejection remained firm even when the hypothetical income was raised to 500,000 naira, with some participants suggesting that only a monthly income of 1 million naira or higher would be considered “acceptable.”
The interviews highlighted a significant gap between lifestyle expectations and the economic reality for many young Nigerians. Despite many of the respondents identifying as students who do not yet earn a full-time salary, they maintained that the high cost of living and the need to maintain specific personal standards made dating a lower-earning partner impossible.
“I’m a student… we need money for so many things,” one participant noted, explaining why a 100,000 naira monthly salary would not meet her requirements.
While some viewers argued that the students are simply being realistic about the impact of inflation on their cost of living, many others have criticized the participants for being “out of touch,” noting that 500,000 naira is a significant income in the current Nigerian economy.
