Human rights activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has criticised the ongoing visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the United Kingdom, arguing that Nigerian musicians contribute more economically to the country through their international engagements than official presidential trips.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sowore described the president’s visit as largely ceremonial, suggesting it offers limited tangible benefits to Nigeria.
He argued that beyond the publicity surrounding such trips, there is little evidence of direct economic gains, adding that the cost of foreign travels often outweighs any potential investment outcomes.
Sowore maintained that Nigeria does not necessarily need frequent foreign visits to attract investors, insisting that a stable and well-structured domestic environment would naturally draw investment into the country.
He further claimed that Nigerian entertainers, through performances and tours abroad particularly in the UK often generate more revenue that directly impacts the Nigerian economy.
President Tinubu’s visit, regarded as one of the most significant engagements between Nigeria and the UK in decades, is expected to include a meeting with King Charles III. The Nigerian government, however, has defended such trips as strategic efforts aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and attracting foreign investment.
Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu has embarked on several international visits, with the UK remaining a key partner in trade, security, and development cooperation, as well as home to a large Nigerian diaspora community.
