The Nigerian Army has officially reopened its recruitment portal, inviting applications from eligible Nigerians for enlistment into its ranks.
The announcement has sparked renewed interest among young people across the country, many of whom see military service as both a career opportunity and a chance to serve the nation.
However, beneath the excitement lies a crucial requirement that officials say many applicants either ignore or fail to meet and it could determine who gets shortlisted.
The Overlooked Requirement: Proper Documentation and Verification
According to recruitment guidelines, one of the most critical conditions is the strict verification of credentials, particularly:
Valid National Identification Number (NIN)
Authentic birth certificate or age declaration
Verified educational certificates (WAEC, NECO, or equivalent)
Military sources warn that a large number of applicants are often disqualified not for lack of qualifications, but due to inconsistencies in personal data — especially mismatched names, incorrect dates of birth, or unverifiable certificates.
“Applicants must ensure that all documents align perfectly. Even minor discrepancies can lead to automatic disqualification,” a recruitment officer familiar with the process said.
Beyond documentation, applicants must also meet several standard criteria, including:
Nigerian citizenship by birth
Minimum educational qualification (at least 4–5 credits including English)
Age bracket typically between 18 and 22 years for non-tradesmen, and up to 26 years for tradesmen
Physical and medical fitness
Clean criminal record
Candidates are also expected to pass screening stages such as aptitude tests, physical fitness drills, and background checks.
The Nigerian Army has again cautioned applicants against engaging with fraudsters or paying money to individuals claiming to “facilitate” recruitment.
“The process is free, transparent, and merit-based,” the Army emphasized in previous recruitment notices, urging candidates to apply only through official channels.
With increasing unemployment and economic pressures, competition for military positions is expected to be intense. Analysts note that thousands of applicants typically vie for a limited number of slots, making strict adherence to requirements even more important.
Security experts say strengthening recruitment is part of broader efforts to boost manpower in tackling challenges such as insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across Nigeria.
For many hopefuls, the opportunity is significant but missing a seemingly small requirement could mean losing out entirely.
Prospective applicants are therefore advised to carefully review all guidelines and ensure full compliance before submitting their applications.
