Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has said Britain is repeating the same bad energy policy choices that helped produce Nigeria’s unreliable electricity and fuel shortages. The remark was made in comments published on Sunday, March 22, 2026, as she attacked the UK Labour government’s energy direction and warned against what she called excessive taxes, bureaucracy, and dependence on subsidies.
Badenoch, who spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, said she grew up in an oil-rich country that failed to realise its promise because of poor policy choices, leaving citizens with erratic power supply and repeated fuel scarcity.
She argued that Britain is now drifting toward similar mistakes by discouraging domestic oil and gas development while increasing state interference in the energy sector.
Politically, the statement is significant on two fronts.
In Britain, it sharpens the ideological battle over energy security, climate policy, and economic growth.
In Nigeria, it revives a painful truth: that a country blessed with enormous energy resources still struggles to guarantee steady electricity to its people.
Badenoch’s comparison was meant to criticise Labour, but it also served as a harsh reminder of Nigeria’s long-running governance failures in the power sector.
