Niger’s military government has appointed Gen. Mahaman Sani Kiaou as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, following a major shake-up of the country’s military leadership after last month’s failed mutiny.
Kiaou, who previously served as Chief of Staff of the Army, replaces Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou. His appointment was announced through decrees read on state television on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The changes come less than two weeks after soldiers launched an attempted uprising in Niamey on August 28 and 29. The mutineers reportedly took positions at Base 101 near the international airport and opened fire at several sensitive locations in the capital before forces loyal to the junta regained control.
The fighting reportedly involved members of the Special Reconnaissance Battalion and loyalist forces, with three presidential guards reportedly killed during the confrontation. Authorities subsequently announced the seizure of a large cache of weapons and the arrest of several suspects.
Gen. Tiani has also appointed Gen. Abdourahmane Abou Zataka as Chief of Staff of the Army, while other changes were announced within the air and ground forces.
The reshuffle comes as the junta seeks to reinforce military cohesion and command structures following the internal security crisis.
The failed mutiny had raised questions about the stability of Tiani’s government, although the junta ultimately retained control of the capital.
