The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has commenced its nationwide primaries for the 2027 general elections with a controversial but attention-grabbing policy allowing only successful aspirants to pay nomination fees after emerging winners. Party leaders described the move as part of efforts to encourage wider participation and reduce financial pressure on aspirants contesting various elective positions.
The primaries, which began on Thursday, May 29, 2026, are being conducted across all states for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State House of Assembly positions.
According to NDC national leader, Seriake Dickson, all aspirants who purchased Expression of Interest forms were cleared to participate due to time constraints and logistical challenges linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.
The party leadership also confirmed that unsuccessful aspirants would not be required to purchase nomination forms, while winners would proceed with documentation and payment processes after the primaries.
Party officials say the strategy is aimed at promoting inclusiveness, reducing financial exclusion, and attracting younger candidates and women into active politics.
Meanwhile, NDC warned against violence, intimidation, and unauthorized declaration of results, insisting that only the party’s national headquarters has the authority to officially announce outcomes from the nationwide exercise.
