Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reportedly identified former Finance Commissioner Bimbo Adekanmbi as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.

The development emerged on May 7, 2026, following weeks of consultations and growing speculation over who the governor would support to succeed him at the end of his tenure.

Reports indicate that Adekanmbi, who served under late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, is being considered as a consensus candidate within Makinde’s political camp.

Makinde had earlier stated that he would publicly unveil his preferred candidate before the end of the first week of May, while also noting that consultations with party stakeholders and political leaders were ongoing.

The governor is yet to make an official public declaration on the reported choice as of the time of filing this report.

However, the development has already generated reactions within Oyo’s political space, with analysts suggesting the succession process could shape the future direction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
