Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has thrown his weight behind the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing the move as a step toward fairness, unity and national reconciliation.
Speaking during the party’s National Convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso said the zoning arrangement reflected the principles of equity and federal character needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, allowing the South to complete its turn in producing the country’s leadership would help foster national healing and reinforce internal party stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate, noted that the NDC had quickly transformed into a growing political force capable of rebuilding public trust in governance and offering Nigerians an alternative platform.
He stressed that the party would remain committed to fairness in its political arrangements and leadership structure.
The former governor also referenced historical political alliances that shaped Nigeria’s political evolution, including the partnership between the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) in the 1950s, as well as the coalition involving the Northern People’s Congress (NPC) that preceded Nigeria’s independence.
He further cited the alliance between former President Shehu Shagari and former Vice President Alex Ekwueme during the Second Republic as an example of national cooperation across regional lines.
Kwankwaso added that the NDC would pursue inclusive leadership free from ethnic and religious bias, while working to restore Nigeria’s image both at home and abroad.
