Students and teachers of Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) a secondary school in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, who were abducted during an early morning attack have regained their freedom.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped on Monday about 9 a.m. while students were writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
A source familiar with the incident confirmed that all those abducted have been rescued and reunited with their families.
According to the source, one of those rescued is the school’s vice principal, who was among the staff members taken during the attack.
“Glory be to God, they are back home,” the source said, expressing relief over the safe return of the victims.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the rescue or whether any arrests were made in connection with the incident.
Further details are expected as security agencies provide updates on the operation.
Meanwhile, the rescue was done by Troops of Operation HADIN KAI.
However, the military disclosed that one soldier attached to Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed during the exchange of gunfire.
It described the deceased personnel as heroes who paid the supreme price while protecting civilians and combating insurgency in the North-East.
The military said operations have been intensified to locate the remaining abducted victim and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
It added that security has been strengthened around schools and other vulnerable communities in the area to prevent further attacks.
Operation HADIN KAI noted that the assault reflects what it described as the increasing desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained military pressure, accusing them of resorting to attacks on soft civilian targets, including schools.
