A festive wedding celebration in the Tudun Yola Quarters of Kano turned into a scene of carnage when 34-year-old Rabiu Mukthar allegedly opened fire on guests, killing one person and injuring three others.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed that officers responded immediately to reports of gunfire at the event. According to police spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspect emerged from his nearby residence as music played at the ceremony and fired several shots into the crowd with a pump-action gun, causing mass panic.
During interrogation, Mukthar reportedly claimed that the loud music from the wedding was preventing him from sleeping, sparking a violent outburst of frustration that led him to target the attendees.
“Police moved to the scene and arrested Mukthar and another suspect. A pump-action gun was recovered from him,” Kiyawa stated. The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further questioning, and the recovered firearm will be used as evidence.
The incident has reignited urgent concerns regarding the presence of illegal firearms in residential areas and the dangerous trend of using lethal force to settle disputes over noise and social gatherings.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police convened a strategic meeting with top commanders at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, Kano. While the leadership reviewed the state’s security situation and commended the force’s ongoing efforts in crime prevention and community engagement, the violence in Tudun Yola serves as a grim reminder of the volatility that can erupt in residential neighborhoods.
Police officials have issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that disagreements over noise or social disturbances should be reported to the appropriate authorities rather than handled through violence, which can lead to irreversible loss of life.
