A couple and their six-month-old daughter who were abducted from their residence in Kaduna State have regained their freedom after nine days in captivity, bringing relief to their family and renewed attention to the persistent threat of kidnapping in the state.

The victims, identified as Ahmed Abubakar Zakka, his wife and their infant daughter, Fatima, were abducted from their home in Alrahus Estate, Millennium City, Chikun Local Government Area, on October 6, 2026.

Their release was confirmed on Thursday, October 15, by sources who spoke to media organisations. Reports indicate that the family was returning to Kaduna metropolis after their release.

The circumstances surrounding their freedom remained unclear at the time of reporting. There was no confirmed information on whether a ransom was paid or the precise role played by the different individuals and security actors involved in efforts to secure their release.

The abduction attracted widespread public concern after a video circulated on social media showing Zakka holding his crying baby while an armed man pointed a firearm at him. His wife was also seen in the footage appealing for help. The video triggered outrage and calls for urgent intervention to secure the family’s release.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was among the public figures who called on security agencies to act swiftly to rescue the victims.

Although the family’s release is a welcome development, concerns remain over the safety of residents in Millennium City and other communities in Kaduna State affected by kidnapping and armed attacks.

The incident has renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, timely security responses and sustained efforts to prevent criminal groups from targeting homes and vulnerable residents.

For the Zakka family, their return brings relief after a frightening ordeal. For many other residents, however, the wider question remains whether security measures can prevent similar incidents and ensure that families are safe in their own homes.
