The President of the Iran Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, has indicated that the country’s national soccer team’s participation in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup is uncertain as escalation with the United States and Israel deepens, raising security and logistical concerns. Taj made the comments from Tehran this weekend, stressing that after recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory and ongoing retaliatory exchanges, it was “difficult to participate in the World Cup under these circumstances.”
Iran qualified for the tournament co‑hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, but its group fixtures — scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle in June — are now in jeopardy amid the conflict.
The reported hesitation comes as FIFA officials monitor developments closely, insisting on a commitment to a safe and inclusive tournament but acknowledging the volatility of the geopolitical landscape.
Iran’s final decision has not been formally announced, and uncertainty remains over whether political tensions and existing U.S. travel restrictions on Iranian nationals will ultimately sideline the team from football’s flagship global event.
