The lawmaker of the Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai is a vehement denunciator of the family of a former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai over allegations reportedly targeted at the family on a probe conducted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
In March 2, 2026, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai referred to the claims of finding of a phone tapping equipment as false and politically instigated. He claimed that the anti-corruption agency was trying to charge him with a media war as opposed to due process of law.
Right to Silence
In response to the allegations that his father was not cooperative with law enforcers, the legislator contended that the former governor had his constitutional right to remain silent. He insisted that this decision was not to be perceived as being guilty or obstructive.
In quoting his father, he said that Mallam El-Rufai had always urged authorities to file charges in a court of law against him should there be evidence and not to engage in a campaign of public imputations as the family said.
So-called Seizure of Equipment.
The statement also rejected the reports that there had been retrieval of advanced surveillance or phone tapping gadgets on the property of the former governor. The family accused that only personal possessions such as old cell phones, flash disks and laptops were confiscated in the search.
Mohammed Bello El-Rufai refused to acknowledge any discovery of specialized espionage gear or classified security records, characterizing any news to the vice-versa as false.
Dispute Over Search Warrant
One of the main arguments of the reaction of the family regards the legality of the search warrant used in the operation. The warrant was obtained improperly as the statement accuses and it has been contested in the court. The family claimed their legal issues are seeking compensations over what they described as procedural anomalies.
Legal Action
The Kaduna North legislator ended by confirming that the family will appeal the case in the court. He was optimistic that the courts would decide on the legality of the search and also on the defamatory claims that the family referred to.
At the time of writing this report, the ICPC did not publicly answer the recent statement of the El-Rufai family.
