The death of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been confirmed by the state media and other official broadcasters in Iran thus ending the decades of rule of his Islamic Republic. Iranian state television and other government-affiliated news outlets announced his death early Sunday and stated that the country would have a 40-day mourning period.
The circumstances of his death were not clearly described in the official announcement, but other previous news outlets reported on the matter attributed it to recent combined military attacks by the United States and Israel.
The state television was showing historical coverage of Khamenei with mourning graphics, and the official sources were addressing the legacy of the deceased leader and his place as the ultimate religious and political leader of the country
