The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) has announced plans to engage more than 1.4 million members of the National Youth Service Corps for the conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the disclosure during a visit to the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps (National Youth Service Corps) in Abuja, where he met with the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu.
According to Amupitan, 707,384 corps members will be deployed for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the same number will also be required for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections set for February 6, 2027.
He further noted that over 52,000 additional corps members would be needed to support governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as several bye-elections nationwide.
The INEC chairman commended corps members for their contribution to the credibility of the 2023 general elections, saying their presence helped strengthen transparency and orderliness at polling units across the country.
He also assured that the commission is working to improve welfare provisions and insurance coverage for corps members participating in election duties.
In his response, NYSC Director-General Olakunle Nafiu pledged the scheme’s full cooperation with INEC, adding that upcoming Gen Z corps members are expected to enhance the electoral process with stronger digital and technological competencies.
