Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted nine people, including his wife and two children, during an attack on Babban Saura (PW) community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, as Nigerians marked the country’s 66th Independence Day.

According to a community source who spoke with the newsmen, the attackers invaded three houses in the community.

The assailants first stormed the residence of an elderly man and abducted two of his children before moving to another house belonging to a resident identified as Sikiru.

The attackers reportedly broke through the fence and entered Sikiru’s compound. He attempted to resist them and engaged some of the assailants in a struggle inside his parlour.

The bandits eventually shot him dead before abducting his wife and two children.

The attackers also invaded a neighbouring residence and abducted a woman identified as Maman Mubarak and her four children.

Mubarak was later rescued by soldiers and local vigilantes, but her four children remained in captivity.

The commander of the local vigilantes, Usman Adamu, confirmed the incident to NAN, saying nine people were initially taken by the attackers.

Adamu said the vigilantes received a distress call and immediately alerted soldiers, who joined the operation to track the bandits.

He said the security team traced the attackers to the Eastern Bypass area and rescued Mubarak.

“We received a distress call that bandits had entered Babban Saura PW, and so we informed soldiers who joined us.

“We traced them to the Eastern Bypass area and succeeded in rescuing a woman, Maman Mubarak, whose four children were among those kidnapped,” he said.

Adamu said security personnel continued efforts to rescue the remaining victims but the attackers escaped with them.

Another resident, Anas, said Sikiru contacted him by phone after the attackers invaded the community.
