Commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in Ibadan, Oyo State have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to intervene urgently to ease the growing hardship caused by the recent surge in petrol prices.
On Friday, March 13, 2026, leaders of associations representing “okada” riders and keke napep operators told journalists that the continuous rise in Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) has sharply increased their operating costs and squeezed their daily earnings. They said many riders now struggle to buy petrol for their vehicles, forcing some to park their bikes and suspend work.
The operators explained that higher fuel costs have pushed up transport fares, making daily commuting more expensive for residents. They argued that the situation is worsening the burden on both transport workers and commuters who depend on affordable rides for their livelihoods and everyday activities. Some riders said they have started increasing their fares simply to cover the rising cost of petrol. Experts say that fuel price hikes have been common across Nigeria in recent months as pump prices climb in response to market conditions and subsidy removals.
The operators appealed to the Federal Government to consider policies that could stabilise petrol prices, provide relief measures, or introduce alternative fuels to reduce dependence on expensive petrol. They warned that continued hardship could lead to service disruptions and greater economic strain on vulnerable workers.
