In Ondo State politics, infrastructure has traditionally been measured in asphalt and concrete. Governors are routinely judged by the kilometres of roads graded and the physical blocks of classrooms constructed. Yet, as the state moves closer to the next gubernatorial polls, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is shifting the electoral conversation towards a more potent, long-term asset: intellectual capital and global institutional prestige.
The recent announcement that five scholars from the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, have secured places on the prestigious Stanford–Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists list is not merely an academic achievement. It is a significant political masterstroke for an administration determined to demonstrate that its governance blueprint is both visionary and effective.
For the average voter, academic rankings may sometimes appear detached from everyday realities. However, when considered alongside the Federal Government’s recent recognition of Governor Aiyedatiwa with the Best Governor in Education Award in Abuja, the achievement presents a compelling narrative of deliberate investment producing immediate international dividends.
UNIMED’s global breakthrough did not happen in isolation. It is the direct outcome of strategic fiscal interventions. By approving an unprecedented 60 per cent increase in the university’s monthly state subvention earlier this year, the Aiyedatiwa administration gave the institution the financial capacity to improve its research facilities and retain outstanding academic talent.
Furthermore, through the prompt implementation of agreements between the Federal Government and university unions, the Governor helped to prevent the perennial strikes that routinely disrupt tertiary education in Nigeria. UNIMED remained open, stable and focused on academic excellence while other institutions faced disruptions.
Politically, this achievement provides Governor Aiyedatiwa with a powerful response to opposition criticism. For months, rival political factions have attempted to portray the administration as transitional or passive. The UNIMED breakthrough significantly challenges that narrative.
It gives the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a concrete intellectual and institutional success story to present to Ondo’s highly sophisticated and education-conscious electorate. In a state that prides itself on being the intellectual bedrock of South-West Nigeria, there is no greater political currency than demonstrating that public education has been elevated to a higher standard.
As voters begin to assess their choices for the state’s future, the Aiyedatiwa administration has demonstrated that its policies do more than manage the present; they are positioning Ondo State to compete on the global stage.
By funding minds as aggressively as roads, Governor Aiyedatiwa has secured something far more enduring than temporary political compliance. He has earned political goodwill built on the pride of a state redefining its future through the power of science.
