Court Fixes November 20 to Rule on Atiku’s Fresh Application Against Tinubu

ABUJA, Nigeria | October 13, 2026. The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed November 20, 2026, to rule on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s application seeking to amend his suit challenging President Bola Tinubu’s eligibility for the 2027 presidential election.

Justice Inyang Ekwo fixed the date on Tuesday after lawyers representing Atiku, the president, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented their arguments for and against the application.

Atiku and his party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are challenging Tinubu’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate submitted to INEC by the APC. They allege that the certificate was forged and are asking the court to order the removal of Tinubu’s and the APC’s names from the list of candidates and parties for the 2027 election.

The president and APC have denied submitting a forged certificate, while INEC has challenged the competence of the suit.

Atiku and the ADC want to amend their originating summons to correct errors in the documents, provide clearer exhibits and give further details supporting their allegations.

However, Tinubu’s lawyers argue that the proposed changes go beyond correcting errors and would introduce new claims after the constitutional deadline. APC and INEC also oppose the application.

The court’s November 20 decision will determine whether the proposed amendments can proceed; it will not, by itself, decide the underlying allegations against Tinubu.
