A Nigerian police officer was captured on video firing his service weapon into the air along a highway in Lagos after a TikTok content creator promised him ₦20,000 (about $12) a gesture the creator said was meant to stop the officer from detaining him. The clip, widely shared on TikTok on Wednesday, February 26, 2026, shows the officer discharging his firearm repeatedly while other uniformed officers stand nearby, prompting online debate over police conduct and the use of firearms.

The incident occurred on a busy road in Lagos State, but police authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the exact location or offered an official statement about the officer’s actions. Videos circulating on social media suggest the exchange began after the influencer attempted to record the officer on duty, with the cash offer apparently made during the encounter.

Security experts caution that firing a weapon into the air without a clear threat is against Nigeria Police Force operational procedures and can endanger bystanders if bullets fall back to the ground. The viral footage has reignited calls for stricter discipline and accountability within the police, particularly around the professional use of firearms and interactions with civilians.
