Pope Leo XIV has indicated that the Catholic Church will not expand its approach to same-sex relationships beyond allowing pastoral blessings, reaffirming the Church’s traditional doctrinal boundaries.
Speaking on recent pastoral guidelines, the Pope clarified that while blessings may be offered in specific contexts as an act of welcome and accompaniment, they should not be interpreted as recognition of same-sex unions as equivalent to marriage.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate within the Catholic Church following earlier Vatican guidance that permitted non-liturgical blessings for individuals in same-sex relationships, provided they are not confused with sacramental marriage rites.
Church officials say the Pope’s position is aimed at maintaining doctrinal consistency while still extending pastoral care to all members of the Catholic community.
The statement is expected to reignite discussion among both conservative and progressive factions within the global Church.
