Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has thrown his political weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, insisting that no northerner should contest the presidency this cycle amid calls for power rotation and national equity. Fintiri made the declaration on Monday, March 2, 2026, in Yola, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders meeting following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.
The governor argued that with Tinubu — a South-West politician — seeking re-election, northern aspirants should step aside to preserve the unwritten south-north power rotation convention and avoid deepening regional divisions ahead of next year’s polls.
Fintiri’s comments have added fuel to the broader national debate over zoning and political representation, especially as leaders and interest groups across regions discuss equity in leadership after Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms and Tinubu’s first four-year tenure.
He also pledged to mobilise APC structures in Adamawa to deliver strong electoral support for Tinubu’s re-election, framing his position as essential for continuity and stability in governance.
