Former Ekiti State Governor and ex-Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Kayode Fayemi, has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost its original direction and political vision, criticizing the increasing use of consensus primaries within the party as contrary to democratic principles and internal party democracy.
Fayemi expressed concern that the party’s internal democratic structures have gradually weakened, arguing that imposing candidates through consensus arrangements undermines transparency, healthy competition, and the credibility of the electoral process within political parties.
He warned that political parties risk alienating loyal members when democratic participation is replaced with predetermined outcomes.
According to the former governor, political parties must remain accountable to their members and uphold democratic values if they hope to maintain public confidence and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system.
He stressed that internal democracy remains essential for producing credible leaders and sustaining political stability.
Fayemi’s comments come amid growing tensions and complaints from aspirants and party stakeholders in several states following the conduct of recent APC primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the remarks reflect broader concerns within Nigeria’s political landscape over candidate selection processes, party discipline, and the future of internal democracy as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.
