Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has declared that Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, currently stands as the strongest contender for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, while predicting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would be unsuccessful if he contests.
Speaking during an interview, Lawal praised Obi’s leadership style, describing him as a leader who would govern with fairness and place the nation’s interests above personal considerations.
According to him, Obi possesses qualities that distinguish him from other politicians expected to feature prominently in the 2027 race.
Assessing the major political figures likely to contest the presidency, Lawal rated Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the leading contenders, placing President Bola Tinubu behind them, while giving Atiku Abubakar the lowest rating.
He also expressed confidence that Atiku would not emerge victorious in the next general election, insisting that the former vice president’s chances of winning were slim.
Lawal further commented on former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as a competent politician but suggesting that personal ambition had influenced some of his political decisions.
On President Bola Tinubu, the former SGF acknowledged what he described as Tinubu’s generosity before assuming office, recalling instances where the President reportedly assisted individuals financially without expecting immediate rewards.
However, Lawal argued that Tinubu had changed since becoming President, alleging that his approach to governance no longer reflected the qualities he once admired.
He also criticised National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, saying he had known him since their university days and claiming he had observed certain character traits that shaped his opinion of the security chief.
Lawal’s remarks come as political consultations and alliance talks continue ahead of the 2027 general election, although political parties are yet to officially commence campaigns.
