A prominent leader from Opobo Kingdom in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State has criticised Governor Siminalayi Fubara, alleging that despite serving as governor for four years, he has failed to execute any meaningful government project in his hometown apart from constructing his personal residence.
The remarks were made during a community gathering in Opobo, with the speaker accusing the governor of neglecting the community that produced him while prioritising personal interests over public infrastructure. According to the community leader, residents had expected Fubara’s administration to deliver critical projects capable of improving economic activities, education, healthcare and road infrastructure in the ancient kingdom.
The criticism comes despite previous announcements by Governor Fubara’s administration regarding development initiatives in Opobo, including the commissioning of the 7-kilometre Opobo Ring Road and three bridges, as well as plans for land reclamation and the establishment of a higher institution in the area.
The community leader insisted that many of the promised projects have either not materialised or have failed to meet residents’ expectations, arguing that visible government presence remains limited in the governor’s hometown.
The comments have generated political reactions across Rivers State, with supporters of the governor defending his administration’s record and pointing to infrastructure projects executed in various parts of the state. Critics, however, maintain that Opobo deserves greater attention given its historical significance and the fact that it is the governor’s ancestral home.
Neither Governor Fubara nor the Rivers State Government had officially responded to the latest allegations as of the time of filing this report.
